The Dumbest State in the Union

Just when Kansas’s lock on Dumbest State in the Union was looking so assured that the award was simply going to be given in perpetuity, Missouri lodges a half-decent challenge. The Missouri State Legislature is currently debating House Concurrent Resolution 13, which would establish Christianity as the official state religion.

I was not able to find the full text of the bill online, but will post it when it comes up. In the meanwhile, here’s how the local Missuori press reports on the legislation:

The resolution would recognize “a Christian god” and it would not protect minority religions, but “protect the majority’s right to express their religious beliefs.” The resolution also recognizes that, “a greater power exists,” and only Christianity receives what the resolution calls, “justified recognition.”

In a country where people know more about “The Simpsons” than the Bill of Rights, and where United States Senators do not understand the constitutional right to political speech, perhaps it is not surprising that the Missouri legislature has yet to learn of the Establishment Clause or the the passage of the Fourteenth Amendment, which applies the duties and proscriptions of the Bill of Rights to the states.

It seems the culture wars will continue unabated. The saddest part is that those who believe that the greatness of America lies in the liberties established by its flawed, but brilliant Constitution tend to “play down to the level of their competition.” It would be nice, once and for all, for Americans – non-Christians and Christians alike – to put these idiots in their place.

One cautionary note: before we go taking anything away from Kansas, let’s wait and see how the Missouri legislature votes.
